TWIN DISC TECHNODRIVE: from a small but aggressive firm to a member of an international company. The economic and cultural history of the area surrounding Bologna TECHNODRIVE is located in Emilia Romagna in the North of Italy, in the district of Bologna close to Modena and Ferrara. Bologna was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy in 1860 and became one of its main cities for cultural and political liveliness and for the fast economic development. The region is one of most developed from the economic and the social point of view. The city of Bologna is the regional capital (with 500,000 inhabitants) and it is famous for its ancient University (XII century) and for the cultural and gastronomic traditions. The city has also a European perspective (capital of culture in 2000). Bologna has an airport, the fourth in Italy for importance, with daily flights to Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt, Paris, Madrid, Stockholm and London. The origins: from Cento to Decima The history of TECHNODRIVE begins in Cento, town with 30,000 inhabitants, confining with Bologna's, Ferrara's and Modena's territories. Products linked to agriculture and automobiles are developed by the most important engineering companies of the area (Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Fiat New Holland, Motori VM). In order to understand how this winning idea came into being, it is necessary to start from the time when Northern Italy was trying to rebuild itself after World War II, when the main objective was to find a niche in the already existing relationship between the city and the country, since the economy up until the war had been based on agriculture and handmade goods. The local environment had the essential features to become industrially developed: there was a large labour supply, professional competence and entrepreneurship. In 1959 the firm was a small workshop with a couple of workers. There was no other way to grow but working hard trying to get by as best as possible with imagination and initiative. A lot was produced with war material: for example clutches were manufactured with parts of Ford trucks left behind by the Americans after the Second World War. Other engines manufacturers apart from Motori VM have enlarged its market and the ensuing demand cannot be satisfied anymore by the small workshop. In 1973 with the name of TECHNODRIVE the company moves to San Matteo Decima from the small factory building. In this early stage TECHNODRIVE operations are focused on the local market requirements. There are about 8 employees who run the technical department, the sales department, purchasing and production and the turnover of the first year is 150.000 €. Later on new products are developed, from gearboxes to couplings; the clutch range is enlarged and the manufacturing of the first marine gears starts, these were mechanical drive for low powers. From a small firm able of satisfying the local requirements, TECHNODRIVE becomes an organization capable of exporting its own product. The company management changes in the '90's: the decisive turning point is connected with decision to achieve the Quality Certification to comply with the European standards and meet the requirements of the customers, which are more and more international. The ISO 9001 certification, granted by The Italian Naval Register (R.I.N.A.) in 1994 has certainly helped in the achievement of the other important certification by ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) and Lloyd's Register. The same year in Chambery the French subsidiary named TECHNODRIVE France starts its operations and it's on the French market that Technodrive achieves most of its exports. With the markets globalisation the management's commitment is to enter into the world market. The beginning of the relationship with TWIN DISC has to be traced back into the belief that to be highly competitive it's essential to work with first-class partners and on the same wave-length with them. This will lead to the contract signed in December 1998. From February 1999, TECHNODRIVE is part of the group TWIN DISC and it is named TWIN DISC TECHNODRIVE and in 2001 the company is also certified according to ISO 14001. The world markets are open to the Company.
